Tips for beginners:
How to learn cross-country skiing
What could be better in winter than to let off steam on the snow-covered landscapes and enjoy the mountain scenery? In the Alps, you not only have a large selection of ski resorts and snow parks at your disposal - here you will find a wide variety of ways to actively spend your winter holiday. One winter sport that is gaining more and more fans is cross-country skiing. Here you can not only get your body going again, but also your soul.
Cross-country skiing is not only a lot of fun - it is also healthy. You train your cardiovascular system and your endurance. You can relieve stress while cross-country skiing and find your inner balance amidst the picturesque winter landscapes. Unlike skiing or snowboarding, cross-country skiing is one of the few winter sports that is particularly easy on the joints.
In addition, cross-country skiing offers you the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful winter landscape in peace and quiet. You glide almost silently over snow-covered trails and can find your own rhythm.
Cross-country skiing inspires young and old, fans and professionals. But even those who dare to try cross-country skiing for the first time will soon enjoy the winter sport. After all, cross-country skiing is relatively easy to learn. Here we tell you what you need to bear in mind and what technique and equipment you need for cross-country skiing:
-
Preparation: How can I train cross-country skiing off the trail?
If you want to start cross-country skiing training before the first snowfall, you can prepare yourself ideally for the cross-country experience with so-called dry runs. For example, you can start with balance and stretching exercises. And even if it doesn't sound like an adventure or a change of pace to many people at first, Nordic walking can be the perfect preparation for starting cross-country skiing training. Not only does it keep you fit - you also practise the diagonal stride that you will later need for the classic technique in the cross-country trail.
If you want a bit more speed and action, inline skating can be the right preparation. Here you train an almost identical sequence of movements. You can get even closer to cross-country skiing if you have the option of using roller skis.
-
The right trail: Which trail is suitable for which type of cross-country skier?
If you are on cross-country skis for the first time, you should first concentrate on training in the valley. On the valley trails you will find picturesque paths with only slight inclines. As a beginner, you should not forget how strenuous cross-country skiing training can be: Choose shorter routes and be aware that especially frosty temperatures make cross-country skiing even more intense and strenuous.
Just as you already know from alpine skiing, the cross-country ski runs are also marked with different levels of difficulty:
blue = easy
red = moderately difficult
black = difficult -
A question of technique: classic or skating?
Before you start cross-country skiing training full of euphoria, you should ask yourself which technique you want to start with. It is generally advisable to decide on a style - whether classic or skating. Among other things, this decision will influence the choice of the right cross-country skiing equipment.
If you are new to cross-country skiing, the classic technique on a groomed trail is probably the best choice.In general, you should master two stride techniques for classic cross-country skiing:
- The diagonal stride:
You may not have been aware of it, but the diagonal stride is something you do every day - every time you walk. You put one foot in front of the other. When cross-country skiing, you have one ski under each foot, which means that you need a little more strength to push off from the ground on snowy ground. To achieve better balance, you should move your hands diagonally to your legs.
- The double pole push:
In contrast to the diagonal step - which makes it more strenuous - your legs are parallel to the track in the double pole push. The arms also move synchronously. You only get a push from your poles: simply push on the left and right at the same time and you will be gliding along the track with both legs.
If you have a little more experience and like to use inline skates, you can try the skating technique after a short time.
Skating is comparable to the movement you make when ice skating. In general, the skating technique is more strenuous, but also faster than the classic cross-country skiing style. Skating skis are also usually a little shorter and the poles a little longer than classic skis. Here you don't train on groomed tracks, but on tracks that are flattened and offer enough surface for the skating movement. Many of our SPORT 2000 rent dealers offer skating ski rental in addition to classic cross-country ski rental. Book your cross-country skis easily online!

Skis, poles & Co: Where can I find the right cross-country skiing equipment?
You want to try something new and are not yet sure whether cross-country skiing is the right winter sport for you? In this case you are best advised to rent your equipment first. For beginners, we often recommend the so-called Nowax skis in our rental shops: with the repulsion zones made of micro-scales on the underside, you have a better grip on the trail. We also advise you individually in the rental shops of SPORT 2000 rent on the selection of suitable cross-country ski boots and poles:
Whether skating or classic - depending on the cross-country technique, you should use different equipment. The pole length, for example, depends on this. When it comes to boots, you should choose a model that reaches about halfway up to the ankle. If you want to switch between different techniques, it is also a good idea to choose a flexible binding.
Our professionally trained experts in the SPORT 2000 rent shops will show you which cross-country skiing equipment suits you and your style!

Functional clothing: What do I wear for cross-country skiing?
As much as necessary, as little as possible - this is also the motto when it comes to the right cross-country skiing clothing. Because you can quickly start to sweat when cross-country skiing, you should focus above all on breathable functional clothing. Windstopper jackets in combination with a fleece pullover and the right ski underwear are considered ideal for a visit to the snowy cross-country trails. Since you need sufficient freedom of movement when cross-country skiing, you should make sure that all garments - including gloves and bonnet - have a close-fitting cut.
