Whether in summer or during your winter holiday: if you come to Upper Austria, there's one thing you absolutely have to try - dumplings! And there are plenty of them, from bacon dumplings and grammel dumplings to cheese dumplings. The sweet dumpling cuisine is also extremely varied. The small balls have a long tradition in the Land ob der Enns and are a firm fixture on the menu in every household - and every pub kitchen. They are often served with cabbage, for example in the form of Stöcklkraut, sauerkraut or as a warm cabbage salad.
Tradition and customs are also a big topic in Upper Austria outside of the culinary world. On the night before 6 January, for example, it is worth visiting the numerous Glöckler runs in the Salzkammergut, for example in Ebensee or on Lake Traunsee. Incidentally, the one in Ebensee is a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage site. Another well-known UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site is Hallstatt. The picturesque town is also known for its long tradition of salt mining and is one of Austria's tourist hotspots.
The variety of art and cultural offerings is also impressive. The famous composer Anton Bruckner, for example, came from Upper Austria. First-class concerts take place in the Brucknerhaus in Linz. The Mühlviertel boasts numerous castles and palaces, including Clam Castle, where concerts with world stars such as Elton John and Take That take place in summer, Greinburg Castle, the oldest residential castle in Austria, the Prandegg ruins and the enchanting Ort Lake Castle in Gmunden on Lake Traunsee.
We look forward to your visit to Upper Austria!

Upper Austria may not be the federal state with the most ski resorts, but they are particularly family-friendly. The best known include Hinterstoder - Höss, Dachstein West and Obertraun. Hochficht, Feuerkogel, Kasberg and Wurzeralm also guarantee lots of fun on the piste. Many villages also have their own small lifts, for example in Liebenau, Mönchdorf, Hochlecken - Neukirchen, Kirchschlag, Sternstein in Bad Leonfelden or Bameshub in Eschenau im Hausruckkreis.
Most of the Upper Austrian ski resorts have efficient snow-making facilities. Hinterstoder, Dachstein West, Obertraun and the Hochficht can be regarded as relatively snow-sure. The Feuerkogel is located on a high plateau. Accordingly, this ski area can also be categorised as relatively snow-sure. The Wurzeralm ski area, a high alpine pasture at around 1,400 metres, also offers skiing for almost the entire winter.
Most ski resorts in Upper Austria open their gates for skiing, snowboarding etc. in mid-December. Depending on the altitude and snow conditions, the season ends at the end of March to mid-April. Most lifts close their gates after Easter.
