Before you embark on a ski-touring adventure, you should be well prepared. Your main focus must safety. From planning and checking your equipment to choosing the right ski tour for you – there are a lot of things to consider when preparing your next tour:

1. Draw up a detailed plan for the ski tour.
2. Make sure the tour is appropriate for your level of fitness and health.
3. Check the avalanche situation in advance.
4. Check the functionality of your equipment carefully.
5. Drink and eat plenty during your tour.
6. Always keep an eye on the weather. In the Alps, snow and wind can rapidly intensify.
7. Keep a sufficient distance from other skiers – especially on the descent.
8. Wear a helmet for your safety.
9. Pay attention to nature, too. After all, we are only guests in the mountains!

The general rule for ski touring is: you can only go off-piste if you are familiar with the area and know about avalanches. If you are relatively new to winter sports, it is advisable to seek advice from a guide.

If you are planning a ski tour, you should carefully consider the difference between two areas: organised ski areas and free ski areas.

1. Organised ski areas:

Organised ski areas include all ski slopes designated as such. These include the classic ski slopes, but also fun parks and snow parks. You are in an organised ski area wherever the ski company has indicated this on its maps.
FIS rule no. 7 tells you which rules you should observe when ski touring within the organised ski area.

1. Free ski areas:

Free ski areas therefore include all areas that are not part of an organised ski area. Here, the access to the forest area as well as the additional freedom of movement in the alpine terrain above the tree line is specifically regulated for ski tourers.

• Skis, bindings, boots and skins: Lightweight touring skis with the right touring binding form the basis for ski touring. With the special skis, you can climb the mountain even in the snow and cold temperatures. You can fix the binding to the boot during the descent. The appropriate ski touring skins prevent you from sliding backwards on the ascent. Ski touring boots that you can rent at Sport 2000 rent are particularly flexible and can be fixed for the descent.
   
• Clothing: If you want to go ski touring, you should layer your clothes. This way you can wear a thinner layer during the ascent and put on a warming windbreaker when you reach the top. To keep your hands warm, you can wear thinner gloves under ski gloves or mittens.
   
• Goggles and helmet: Sunglasses and ski goggles are just as much part of the equipment for a ski tour as a protective ski helmet. Especially on off-piste descents, but also on your ascent, a helmet can be a lifesaver.
   
• Backpack: If you want to take along drinks, snacks and other provisions, but also spare clothing and equipment, you should not forget a backpack on your ski tour.
   
• Beacon: An avalanche transceiver – also know as a beacon – also belongs in the backpack on every ski tour. An avalanche shovel and probe are also vital in case of an avalanche.

Touring skis are generally suitable for both the ascent and the subsequent descent. This is made possible by the special design of the ski:

• Skins for adhesion: These are hooked onto the front of the shovel of the skis and are stretched over the underside of the skis. These make it possible to walk up slopes without slipping.
   
• Binding with climbing aid: With this special binding, the shoes are only fastened at the front with two pins. With this, you can turn your foot as usual and fight your way up the mountain. The walk mechanism allows for maximum comfort and mobility – even on steep terrain.
   
• Boots: These are available either with classic lacing or with the modern Boa® system.
   
• Lighter than alpine skis: Touring skis are primarily designed to be lightweight. Due to the low dead weight, a fluid pace can be maintained even uphill.

In order not to sweat excessively and to be sufficiently protected from the cold and wind on your ski tour, you should attach importance to suitable functional clothing. When climbing, your clothes should be light and breathable. Protective, insulating clothing is required for the rapid descent. Therefore, combine several layers that can be put on or taken off individually.
